Waka Huia
Charlie Rahiri describes himself as a reluctant iwi leader. But he was destined by his kaumātua to lead his iwi, Ngati Ranginui. He’s a direct descendant of Iwi chief Paraone Koikoi who surrendered his guns and pouches to the colonial office in 1864, only to be back in his kainga in Taumata three years later fighting for his land by pulling up survey pegs. We look at the changing role of a Māori Leader in Modern society through the eyes of Charlie Rahiri. (R).
